Legendary Canadian Filmmaker Larry Kent hosts as special screening of his 2005 film
THE HAMSTER CAGE

Film critic and radio personality Chris Alexander (Fangoria, AM 640 Toronto, Metro) presents a new screening and lecture series…
It's film school with a twist.

Twice a month, every month, Toronto’s legendary Bloor Cinema plays host to a fun filled, educational and totally irreverent master class in cinema history, featuring many oddball motion pictures that rarely ever make the list of any higher education film syllabus.

Your instructor is Chris Alexander, the “Friday Film Guy” on radio station AM 640 Toronto’s The John Oakley Show, writer for Metro Canada, Canadian correspondent for legendary horror magazine Fangoria and film history teacher at the Toronto Media & Film College.

Thursday, January 14th, 9:30pm
Richard Matheson’s THE LAST MAN ON EARTH (I AM LEGEND)
Forget Will Smith chasing lions and CGI monsters through the streets of NYC, this riveting 1964 Italian/US mood piece is the first – and thus far, best – adaptation of writer Richard Matheson’s groundbreaking existential horror novella I AM LEGEND. Iconic genre star Vincent Price (HOUSE OF WAX) plays Dr. Robert Morgan (Neville in the book), the only immune survivor of a devastating global plague that has turned humanity into shambling, blood hungry vampires. By day he stakes them in their lairs but at night, they claw at his windows and beat at his door, screaming his name and thirsting for his plasma. A lyrical, low budget chiller that rarely strays from the tone of Matheson’s text. Chris Alexander will provide an in depth introduction about Matheson and the effect both the novella and the film has had on vampire fiction.

Thursday, January 28th, 9:30pm
Larry Kent's THE HAMSTER CAGE
Filmmaker Larry Kent will be present for both the introduction and the post-screening Q&A
Legendary Canadian independent director Larry Kent (THE BITTER ASH, HIGH) joins Chris Alexander’s FILM SCHOOL CONFIDENTIAL! for a special presentation of his twisted, award winning taboo smashing 2005 movie THE HAMSTER CAGE.  The ultimate in familial dysfunction, Kent’s sick masterpiece charts the sordid events that unfold during a weekend family reunion. Exploring incest, murder and child abuse, THE HAMSTER CAGE is in line with such unsettling but uncomfortably uproarious pictures as Todd Solondz’s HAPPINESS. A must see…especially with Kent himself there to add context.
Larry Kent is available for interviews by request.

Each screening features an in-depth, entertaining, informative and often humorous lecture from Alexander as well as post-film wrap up and discussion in the Bloor Cinema lounge.

Each screening costs $8 with your Bloor Cinema membership and $10 for non-members, with no commitment to attend any other screenings than the ones you wish to attend.
